Gala Drop are a Lisbon-based group (drummer Afonso Simoes, Guilherme Goncalves on guitar, Neslon Gomes on keyboards, Rui Damaso on bass) that once included Tiago Miranda (still a good friend of the band). Nelson is our current point of contact, and he was responsible for that “Tabanka” edit (on Tiago`s Interzona13) that we, and everyone else (hi Leo) loved, earlier this year. It`s been six years since their debut LP and two since their last record (a collaboration with Six Organs Of Admittance`s Ben Chasny) and in between they have been joined by relocated veteran of the Detroit music scene, Jerrald James, AKA Jerry The Cat. Jerry having played with George Clinton`s Funkadelic and Parliament, and worked with Moodyman and Theo Parrish. He`s on numerous releases on Theo`s Sound Signature, recorded for Clone`s Royal Oak, and provided percussion for Recloose (on Planet E) and Portugal`s Groovement. His characteristic croon is all over “II”.
This is Rock, but Rock informed by Dub`s heavy basslines, and Kosmische jams. Rock where Latin-infused Post Punk alternates with Afro guitar shapes, and the keys borrow from the noisy Funk of Prince`s old mate David Z, and the Techno of the Bellville Three. No UFOs. When this Rock softens it describes singer Jerry The Cat`s move from troubled Motor City to Lisbon. A call for Sun not guns while Wah Wah mixes with Tangerine Dream appregios. Peter Green`s “In The Skies” Blues ride next to Psychedelic Drum machine Soul.
Neslon & Afonso have also done a Gala Drop DJ mix:
“This mixtape strictly includes music that makes up part of Gala Drop’s universe, be it made by GD members (Black, Stasera), close friends (Tiago, Niagara), people that were invited to work on remixes for us (Reggie Dokes, Justin Van Der Volgen), and from the labels that we are on / related to: Golf Channel (Cherry Garcia, The Rhythm Odyssey & Dr Dunks and Justin) and Principe (++++++++++++, Nidia Minaj, Dj Lilocox).”
