The Rave drew all sorts into its countercultural gravitational field and was fertile ground for musical experimentation. See Exhibit A – Ramjac Corporation‘s Cameroon Massif. Percussionist Paul Chivers and his jerry rigged equipment set sail in the late 80s and rapidly became a fixture on the circuit, stealth bombing the kids with an experimental, improvised ethos. This is best illustrated on the archival recording ‘Live at the Brain’. Unfurling across 13 minutes of ad hoc MC’ing, pitch shifting drum breaks, dub reggae sirens and vocal samples, this is a thrilling, prescient piece of work now thoughtfully reissued on by Emotional Rescue.
