Short-Term Memory / Plus or Minus Two / Séance Centre

Let’s make no bones about it, there are a LOT of reissue labels out there but Canada’s Séance Centre unquestionably has the chops to stand out from the crowd. Run by one Brandon Hocura (formerly of Invisible City) the label has gone in artier, more cerebral direction than IC – taking in New Age, Post-Punk, New Wave and other esoteric sound.

The 12th release comes from 80’s Kansas City experimentalists Short Term Memory and is prescient stuff for sure. This EP takes 4 songs from LPs ‘Every Head Needs Cleaning’, one from ‘Cinema Mind’ (both previously only available on tape) and one from the digital only ‘Flub Dub and Other Love Songs’.

Kicking off with ‘Twitch & Jerk’ where sweet melodies ride motorik rhythms, both naive and knowing, electronic but with a very human touch. The press release mentions the band being influenced by Cybotron, Ron Hardy’s tape edits, Shoc Corridor and Haroumi Honso, all of which come through here…. these guys had excellent music taste. There is a real warmth to this music despite the brittle electronica.

The following 3 tracks are almost comically ahead of their time – ‘Hysteria’ is all crystalline electro and twitchy mild discordance. The very, very best is saved for last in the shape of ‘Words’ which is mind-melting electronic soul music.  Deadpan vocals and melancholic meandering backing – one of the best new (old) pieces of music I’ve heard for some time. Essential stuff from the centre!

‘Plus or Minus Two’ is out NOW on Séance Centre
