Time to check in with a lynch-pin of Glasgow’s vibrant DIY scene as Dip Friso weaves through 50 minutes of twisted dub mutations, itchy beat experiments and skewered dancehall versions for our latest mix.

Dip Friso is just one of numerous projects the supremely-talented Murray Collier has been working on for the past few years. Beyond the clutch of frazzled Dip Friso records, you might have come across his pair of Grim Lusk 12”s for Glasgow’s Domestic Exile or his excellent 2019 Sunny Balm album for Chuggy and Lindsay Todd’s Sacred Summits label. Outside of this solo work, Murray’s also been involved in several projects with Hannan Bouchemla Jones. A studio kinship that began with the Quango Quando-sampling disco junk stylings of Pussy Mothers on Optimo Music expanded into more conceptual realms with Echo Party and the ltd edition Hard Drive audio-visual mixtape CDr they released last year.

Murray’s latest Dip Friso record, a self-titled affair released on his own Real Landscapes label, is one of 2024’s bonafide gems you will probably see on lots of end of year lists. Built around an array of lolloping, scuzzed out grooves conjured from a patchwork of hardware n’ instrumentation, the album builds confidently on the sample-based cut+paste approach of previous bits under the Dip Friso name. Not least album opener ‘I'll Get To Hiding’ which frames guest vocalist Jess HK of Still House Plants in a whole different musical light. Other 2024 bits blessed with Murray’s touch to check include an Echo Party track on the recent 12th Isle V/A and a Grim Lusk edit of Tolouse Low Trax on Studio B.

Across his numerous projects, Murray’s work is very emblematic of the rich vein of DIY electronics that have filtered out of Glasgow over the past decade, a lot via the hugely influential Green Door Studios. Think Domestic Exile, 12th Isle, Somewhere Press, Huntleys & Palmers and Optimo’s sprawling empire of sub-labels to throw out a few imprints doing the interesting and important work outside the algorithm.
