I’ve been sent lots of things recently (and bought some) so thought it more than time enough to do a quick round up on the singles. First up…

Moon B ‘II’ (Peoples Potential Unlimited)

This one is fresh out the post box today. PPU (the label) seem to find it east to find this sort of music but its very specific with the touch points (as I hear them) of Larry Heard, Jam & Lewis, Electro records and all with a basement feel. This is obviously a very good thing. Moon B has delivered a killer EP with something for everyone here. Eight tracks with a sort of melodic perfectly-tempo’d raw house feel all recorded on a load of analogue gear - Juno, DX21, Korg Microsampler etc… All round can’t fail music. More please.

Obalski ‘Introducing Obalski’ (Public Possession)

To be honest I am not sure if this one is called that as an EP but its written on the cover so it’ll do. I’m into Obalski. Apparently he works at a binge drinking bar occasionally but more importantly creates music for theatre and galleries via sound installations. This music references a sort of avant-garde world but brings it loosely into the places we are all comfortable with. It’s a modern melodic ambient sound in places (see ‘Lobo’s Point’) but then stretching its wings to odder territories in places with tracks like ‘Ambulate’ and ‘Lobo’s Bells’. Quality business and one of those odd ones you’ll not want to get rid of.

Wildest Dreams ‘Easy Ride / Call To Prayer’ (Smalltown Supersound)

This one slipped out for Record Store Day here last weekend and is the newly released (think its been in the pipeline for a bit) project by DJ Harvey now out of Los Angeles. You know the deal with Harvey. God figure to some, earned his stripes jacking away since way back when and seems to enjoy his life. This record sounds like that taken into the studio but picking up Rare Earth (the first white rock band signed to Motown fact pickers) en route to the studio. Its like the good bit of one of those funky rock records looped and layered with vocals arriving further in. Makes me want to know more. ‘Call To Prayer’ on the flip does the opposite and leaves me not wanting to find out more. Dubbed out acapella vocals and thats about it. Different strokes for different strokes I guess and B side doesn’t win again for me. Worth buying for the other side alone though.

Rohan Bell-Towers ‘E.P’ (Public Possession)

Ok. This one sounds like Erasure on LSD. Not really. It sounds like one of those 80s Italo records but with Rohans vocals riding over the top updated for now. Sort of wonky house in places but there’s lots of space and Bell-Towers fills it well. Have to say that the Tambien chaps are putting together a really good label over there in Munich. Bending the rules and they sound like they like to have fun. Anyway, for a modern Italo / House sound visit the Bell-Towers.

Tambien Project ‘Be Quick, Shit’s Flying Out’ (Public Possession / Under The Influence)

That is probably not what it is called but it’s what it says on the sticker. It’s another one from the Munich Men. This time three tracks of their percussion based business. The A side comes like one of those drummy slow oddball records the Mancuso plays (or played bless him) at The Loft. A heavy journey. Stick with it. The other side comes with the cartoon sound fx and drops them intermittently over a raw house groove. Right time right place and this one would cause some damage. This one has been out for a little bit but is well worth checking.

Suzanne Kraft ‘Missum’ (Running Back)

Right, more of a heads up than a review this one is a mini-album from Suzanne Kraft made up of six tracks of almost old-school ambience (I’m talking 1994 old-school not German kosmiche business). Its a nice little piece and well worth checking. Goes on quite a lot at work which is always a good sign. Heads down concentrating music.

Tempelhof ‘Drake (Young Marco Remix)’ (Hell Yeah Recordings)

I’ve said it before but the one most likely to follow in Todd Terje’s shoes in my eyes (if he wants to go play that game) is Young Marco. He's got a way with melody and he seems to pour it out. This time he delivers a sort of motorik vibe that develops across eight very enjoyable minutes with syncopated synths and almost 808 State (not sure why them) synths. You know. A nod backwards and a move forwards.
