Chikashi Ishizuka
Atz Ogawa
Double bass and electric Blues.Like James Blood Ulmer with Sherwood on Rough Trade. As if EP-4`s Defunkt groove were stripped down in a D`Angelo “Spanish Joint” way. `cept it ain`t quite that funky. But what is?
Spiritual Jazz meets Blaxploitation. Sweet Sweetback`s Baadasssss Song. Brother`s Gonna Work It Out. Keys in call and response with themselves, a Kabbala bassline, and then in come Tropical rhythm clips to make you wonder where you put that Michael Boothman record.
More EP-4 funk. This time thrown with Blasthead angles. Multi-instrumentalist Ogawa-san channels Funkadelic, Frank Zappa, and Holger Czukay.
Maggotbrain cool in a pool. Mandre in search of N*E*R*D with Damo Suzuki on shouts. The Isleys on acid. Woo`s "English Style Of Rowing". If Prince had been strung out on Ash Ra when recording Sign Of The Times.
Ishizuka-san is a member of Su-Paka-Pooh who have been putting records out on labels like Flower and Disorient for well over a decade, while Ogawa-san has been making music in Japan and the US since the mid-80s. His E.P. is released on Wonderball Recordings, the label linked to the legendary music bar in Sapporo of the same name, that is just about to celebrate it`s 17th anniversary.
Big thank you to Yozo-san at Koenji`s equally legendary EAD Records for the vinyl and the connections.
