Emotional Response`s “Diskanted” is four sides of vinyl containing eight tracks selected from the seven E.P.s released on the Diskant label between 2009-2014, collecting and contrasting the productions of Harmonious Thelonious (Stefan Schwander), Don’t DJ, (Florian Meyer), and The Durian Brothers (Stefan & Florian with Marc Matter), all denizens of Dusseldorf’s Salon Des Amateurs. The artists represented here rely on the power of repetition and are painting from a similar palette, yet the over an hour of music manages to feel varied and in flux, the credit for this in part due to the compilation`s excellent curation and sequencing. Polyrhythms pour like water`s song and Reich`s counterpoint gets referenced again, but what sets this likeminded collective apart from the crowd is that they are not fusing traditional elements to modern music (this ain`t no Afro House) and are instead using current technology to recreate music of the ancients. Don`t go looking for hooks, tunes or gimmicks. Everything is just hit like a drum to create a trance-inducing primal noise, altering / lifting the consciousness of both performers and listeners. In that respect Diskant perhaps has more in common with 23 Skidoo`s “The Gospel Comes To New Guinea” and “Seven Songs”, than say fellow Salon Des Amateurs co-conspirator Jan Schulte or African 808 (long player soon come). Performance as ritual, as portal. Jon Hassell`s fourth world inhabited by drum machines and turntablists. Eno & Byrne`s “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” taken to a 21st Century conclusion. Bob Holroyd`s “African Drug” concocted from Nano-samples. Science and nature in symbiotic harmony. Something the Japanese call Shizen or Jinen. The co-existence of man and Earth. Wild sanza and ballaphon jams cut Township Jive. A Vodoun of Ethno Techno field recordings with vinyl crackle for handclaps and feedback for woodwinds. Ndagga digital and Gamelan timbres. I remember being blown away the first time I heard Gamelan . Blown away by its sonic similarities to Detroit`s electronic innovations. This dance must have been within us since our dawn. This means of escape.
