Dream House - Sound Of The Summer

Words by Apiento

Dream house (was it ever a genre? - maybe it is now) originally happened in the late '80s and early '90s and was the sound of Don Carlos and co making deep beautiful melodic house music. Often on labels like Irma and New Music, it had that total beach house feel before that became a term associated with bad people doing bad dancing to bad music. It was music that often had pianos and a very melodic feel. The one everyone knows and that is often cited is the Don Carlos track “Alone”.

Or this one from E.V.O.E which got rinsed by all and sundry…

There is something about these records that is making them sound amazing now and there’s a new school of producers, and some that grew up dancing to these records, now referencing these and making a new take on this sound.

Chatting to Timm from the Is It Balearic label today and he said “this is just very very Balearic”. As I said to him earlier it's that sort of music that you put on and instantly it makes you want to be dancing on a beach miles from nowhere looking at the horizon with the waves on one side and a sound system on the other. Sounds hippy but I'm sure many people have been there.

Anyway, the reason Timm came into the conversation is that they have tracked down Don Carlos to remix their brand new Glass Coffee release and very good it is too. You can check it here.

Telephones, Running Back, Sleeve

There is clearly a whole new wave of producers referencing this sound. One of the first records for me in recent times to hit on this was the Telephone release “Hot Destinations For A Cooler You” on Running Back records in 2014. Killer record. Slowed down grove with his E2E4 Sueno vibe rolling away.

Around then there was also the Dream 2 Science remix of Deep88 on 12 Records. Now I know Dream 2 Science is not a new producer by any means but to illustrate that Dream House sound in these current times I am not sure there is a better example.

Telephones then released his great “Lotusland” on Love On The Rocks. Starting with the sounds of waves and moving in from there it's that Dream House to a tee. I’ve recently been working on the Jose Padilla album for International Feel and we had four producers over to work with Jose in Ibiza. Telephones had to be one of them and his “Day One” (sleeve above) Jose production will be in the shops in the next month. A glorious piece of sunset house that's perfect for now with a beautiful sleeve to boot.

From here I can just see this sound becoming more and more prevalent with recent mixes from Faze Action on their own aptly named “Magic Touch (FA Paradise '89 House Mix)” and a brand new mix from Reverso68 of Templehof’s “Red Venus” keeping the spirit alive and well. Let's be clear, this isn't just music for the beach and mellow times holding hands with the sun, it's perfect for the clubs and maybe as a foil to those downtempo beauties we love from across the worlds of afro, disco and new balearic beat.

We’re calling it as one of the sounds of summer now. Get involved.
