This week, the world learnt of the tragically young passing of J. Saul Kane. Kane was a true originator and iconoclast. His Depth Charge records exploded into life at the end of the eighties, fully formed visions that blew minds and were endlessly emulated but rarely bettered. His lethal production style was deceptively simple but devastating when applied to breakbeat, house or electro.
For such an impactful artist, he kept a low profile. In later years, he set up the constantly interesting D.C Recordings with James Dyer and, more recently, focused his talents on photography. Here are a few standout moments from the legacy he leaves behind.
Depth Charge - Bounty Killers
My teenage brain wanted to hear this in 1989: beats, bass, and macho film samples!
Depth Charge - Depth Charge
With the second record, he completely nailed the formula, pre-dating the Wu-Tang Kung Fu obsession by years. It still stands up, and the 'Bass It' version on the B-side is a really playable uptempo jam.
Battle Creek Brawl - Battle Creek Brawl
Kane was on the buttons for this hectic Britcore outing.
Eon - Infinity (Space & Time Mix)
One of his collaborations with fellow innovator and close friend Ian Loveday, AKA Eon.
Bomb the Bass - You See Me in 3D (Remix)
Sasha at Universe. Nuff said!
Depth Charge - Legend Of The Golden Snake
Slack and headsy with a buzzsaw baseline.
TET - Burning Paradise (Stick Mix)
A house outing but once again showing how devastating beats, bass and judicious use of dubby sounds can be. Sounds completely now.
T.E.T. - Disco Drunkard
A loopy disco groove that popped up on that killer Eskimo compilation.
The Octagon Man - Chromozoid Fly
Slow motion wiggly electro that featured on a Craig Richards Fabric mix.
Depth Charge - Electro Boogie (Shape Generator)
Confrontational and fearless DJ mix that takes no prisoners!
