I must confess I approached this album with a degree of fatigue. Much of the music we receive here at Test Pressing is of an ambient and / or horizontal nature, and while it is often still atmospheric and wonderful it can be hard to find the words. Or different words. Or new words.

This being Jonny Nash I really needn't have worried.

Described as being 'heavily influenced by descriptions of landscape and environment in the work of authors Shusaku Endo, J.G. Ballard and Cormac McCarthy', this is about as far away from lazy signifiers of ambience (birdsong, waves) as is possible. As with McCarthy's bare, poetic prose, this music is austere and its beauty is somewhat sombre. Closer to Michael Nyman and modern minimal classical music than anything. Some of the discordance edging in is reminiscent of another Jonny - Greenwood's - soundtracks.

A stunning start for 2019 from Music From Memory and a stellar body of work from Mr Nash. I whole heartedly urge you to buy this haunting and wonderful LP.
