Jose Mauro
Obnoxious
Far Out
I know nothing about Jose Mauro. The press sheet which accompanies this Far Out (1) reissue states that unfortunately what there is to know has proved near impossible to uncover, since Mauro was tragically killed in a car accident before this, his debut record, was released. I also know very little about Brazilian music. I`m a fan, yes. Having cherry-picked my way through say 15 years of represses, and, when I lived in Tokyo, having spent around 3 hitting dusty basements with lists of tracks by Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Gal Costa, and Airto, cribbed from the mixtapes of Beppe Loda and Daniele Baldelli. But in all honesty, I really know diddly, and that one sheet has plaudits from world-renowned spinners & selectors, like Gilles Peterson and Floating Points, attesting to the unique nature of “Obnoxious”. So what hope do I have of doing it justice? Attempting my usual thing I`d say Caetano (2), Lula Cortes (3), and gentle songs of complex, orchestrated arrangements. The closest thing in my collection is Arthur Verocai (4).
