Just because, we featured his cover for Enzo Avitabile`s “Black Out” at the start of the week and perhaps he deserves a bit more of our attention. Andrea Pazienza was an Italian comic book artist, influenced by Walt Disney, the `60s American Underground, and the seminal Rock posters of Spanish-born, San Francisco-based Victor Moscoso. While Pazienza designed posters for Federico Fellini, he is best known for creating a series of characters, strips, and graphic novels that chronicled the changing face of Italy`s counterculture from psychedelic revolution to disillusioned cynicism and amoral selfism. His first in 1977, was named “Pentothaol”, after a barbiturate, then came “Zanardi” in 1980, though his lasting legacy is probably “Pompeo”, a work that paralleled his own fall, and was written in 1987, one year before his death from a heroin overdose aged 32.
