Co-founder of Japan`s post-war avant-garde art movement, Gutai, Jiro Yoshihara`s later work focused solely on circles, mixing the action painting of Jackson Pollock with Zen (this one is black paint on a white background). “Gutai” (具体) translates as “Embodiment”, and it was explained to me that at its heart is the credo “Don`t copy anyone! Do something no one`s ever done before!”
