For its tenth release Italian label, What Ever Not, has issued a 12 split between WEN co-founder Dan Mela (recording here as Man Dela) and Marco Erroi AKA XXXV Gold Fingers, of Common Series. Marco also hand-drew the artwork, which, with the feel of something on Public Possession, looks like a Stussy flyer for a Knight`s Templar rite. Appropriately then, Man Dela contributes “The Ritual”, a subtly evolving march of Theo-Influenced electronic Soul, of improvised keys and the bottom-end piano from Henrick Schwartz` remix of Switch. Anton Zap transforms the track into Psychedelic Electro, not unlike Michal Turtle`s recently rescued ”Astral Decoy”. Melodies swirling and exploding like soft focus fireworks, while its collapsing, colliding rhythm, to my ears, owes something to Max Dunbar`s ”House Of Woo”. On the flip, XXXV Gold Fingers sneaks in two short field recordings made in London last October: “Portobello” capturing steel pans and conversations, “Africanism” stealing a moment of song and dance. XXXV GF`s track proper, “Galegos”, takes the tribal tone of Common Series` Trantulae, eschews the Acid, but still fixes African tradition and chant in a modern setting. Wolf Muller`s ”Balztanz" meets Fela`s Jazz as the sun rises on Leo and Alfie at Amnesia. King Sunny Ade`s Juju music taken for a Balearic chug. Cosmic synths soar, and it`d go well with Kalab & Hendrix`s “6th Prlll”, although it`s nowhere near as raw.
