Stroom

Words by Piers Harrison

Stroom is rapidly becoming one of our favourite new record labels at Test Pressing towers, and here they return with a very interesting reissue from one Patrick Sellinger. The record comes with the bare bones and cryptic message "I left the music world for the music, that's why I became a pianist. I left the art world for the art". Indeed this twelve inch sounds like it might have been made by two different people.... the A-side is reminiscent of The Flood's 'Cold Cold World' or maybe a male 'TV Scene'. Deadpan vocals, wave, cold balearica. This comes in three handy variants, the Original mix, an instrumental and (my personal favourite) a beatless vocal version.

However the flip is quite the other thing, three austere rather beautiful, solo piano compositions. These apparently come from a 'piece of Selinger recorded, produced and sold in 2006'. So many thanks to Stroom for opening our eyes and ears to this fascinating artist and his world.

Patrick Selinger - Businessmen is out on September the 1st on Stroom
