Polish cellist Karolina Rec moved from quiet Gdynia to busy Warsaw, retaining her connection to her previous home and nature through music. Taking a name that means “the blood of the tree”. Improvising around loops in search of a primitive intensity, “unlearning” her Classical training in Penderecki, Gorecki and Lutoslawski. Out beyond comfort zones. Creating compositions that mix feelings of awe and anxiety. The connection emphasised by track titles; “Flock”, “Nightjar”, “Dark Sky, White Water”, and “Tatry” - the Carpathian mountain range that separates Poland from Slovakia. Towards Karolina`s aim of transporting listeners to a place of imagination, dependent on “need” and “experience”, her strings quiver, shiver, vibrate with the sound of anticipation, of fear. Of hiding in the dark. Danger viewed through a crack between cupboard doors. They hum like insect wings, a sparse, thoughtful song. A song heavy with the sadness of love. Heavy with the knowledge that everything must pass. Playfully swiped, they bark and shout like animals. Sweeping and hooting and calling out. Exposed to tape delay and reverb plate their gentle resonance scores silent film heartbreak. The prey being preyed upon. The poor and the hungry beaten as Chaplin`s Little Tramp looks on. Whistle a whisper of resignation. An old melody handed down. They are an ominous buzz that hovers in and out of earshot. A mosquito taking its aim while you sleep. A grey locust cloud on the horizon. A storm warning. They are Dream House drone (1), building in power from singularity to orchestra. They are calm and finally, illuminated by choir, epiphany.

“Resina” is released by 130701 at the end of September (you can pre-order here). With a UK tour currently being planned Resina plays North London`s Union Chapel on October 15, part of a Daylight Music event alongside Ryan Teague and Emily Hall (entry free / donations suggested).
