Reviews Round-up
March
Bad news: life has been getting in the way. Good news: it's been a GREAT couple of months for new music. As such this is going to be a rapid-fire roundup of the hot new shit that's been hitting the Test Pressing in-box. Getting you, and us, up to speed. So let's go!
EIRWUD MUDWASSER / SNAKER 010 / SNAKER
https://soundcloud.com/snakerlibrary/eirwud-mudwasser-snaker-010
Good things happening for good people. Bucharest's ridiculously humble Eirwud Mudwasser has found the perfect outlet for his work as part of 5ive's ongoing Snaker series. For those not familiar with the concept, it's similar to a library LP, shortish tracks from one artist curated and collated by 5ive. Previous contributors have included Jonny Nash, XXX & XXX and Eirwud has made a stellar contribution. Edging more toward the dance floor more than before, this runs the gamut from dub to italo (Italoh?!) flavoured house, and adds up to an atmospheric, varied and exciting listen. ESSENTIAL 14.5/10

THUNDER TILLMAN / CONDOR SUNFLOWER / ESP INSTITUTE
https://soundcloud.com/esp-institute/esp089-a1/s-8vn17?in=esp-institute/sets/esp089-pre/s-Nbvfv
For me the key calling card of Lovefingers' ESP Institute is psychedelia, be the music for the floor or more contemplative. And never more so than this fairly undefinable record from Sweden's Thunder Tillman. A truly accomplished piece of work comprised entirely of their own playing - a widescreen musical vision beamed in from another dimension. Touching on Beach Boys harmonies en route to somewhere else altogether, this is confident, otherworldly and truly distinctive.
A MAN CALLED ADAM / FARMARAMA / OTHER RECORDS
https://soundcloud.com/levisiteuronline/a-man-called-adam-paul-valery-at-the-disco-lv-premier
Sally Rodgers and Steve Jones return and reassert themselves with this glorious LP. Whilst it touches on some of the bases of their previous work (balearic, jazz, house), the overall feel is one of a deep freedom and confidence to let their imaginations roam. Lyrically it is wordy, playful and unafraid to take left turns. Clever stuff from two of Britain's (kinda) unsung pop heroes. They deserve to be up there with Saint Etienne and it's just great to have them back.

MAVI GÜNES 69 / 3 ÇEMBER / ZEL ZELE
Zel Zele is a new label and the brainchild of Debora Ipekel and Ece Duzgit. Whilst the archival world of Turkish music has been delved into quite deeply, it’s exciting to have a debut record and brand new work here from Mavi Güneş 69. And it’s FUCKING MENTAL. Described as a blend of ‘electronics, kaleidoscopic soundscapes and Turkish psychedelia with folk tales, theremin dances and words of wisdom’. Somehow that doesn’t really do justice to the positive mind-scrambling this little 7” dishes out. Grip this now or regret it later you mooks!

SEAHAWKS / EYES OF THE MOON / CASCINE
https://soundcloud.com/cascine/seahawks-eyes-of-the-moon
Like a pair of wise and marginally shambolic druids, the Seahawks (Jon Tye and Pete Fowler) periodically beam psychedelic missives from their Cornish studio layer. Here comes another one and very welcome it is too in these dark times. Hazy, dazed, beautiful and maybe with a more new age bent than before. As ever Tye and Folwer show an extremely deft hand with melody and concoct 10 simply gorgeous moments for the frazzled listener to submerge themselves into.

DK / MYSTIC WARRIOR / ANTINOTE
https://soundcloud.com/antinote-records/dk-mystic-warrior
Oh look! Another Antinote release from DK and, yes, it's another fucking doozy. Titular track 'Mystic Warrior' and 'Elements' are brainy yet brawny dancefloor jams. 'Worries in the Dance' and 'Earth People' more ambient excursions into a fantastical Asian sound palette with quite the dubwise twist. Thoroughly tested and endorsed by the Test Pressing soundsystem, this record should find a long-standing and happy home in all sensible DJs record bags / oosbs.

NAKARA / NAKARA PERCUSSIONS / KOMOS
Komos is a new(ish) Parisian label that comes belting out of the traps with this reissue of the demented and dementedly rare, private press Nakara Percussions LP. It's an intriguing and enticing piece of work with its creators coming from a jazz background but exploring the myriad textures of Fourth World Music. This has been a cult piece amongst collectors and DJs lucky enough to own it and now we can all get a piece of the action. Excited to see what Komos come with next. The bar has been set mighty high!
