In recent months, I've been locked down doing a whole bunch of historical writing work about New Zealand's '90s and early 2000s house, techno and downbeat scenes. Now that most of that is over (for now), it's time to get back to some extracurricular activities, like digging into a few recent Australian reissue releases and a stunning new private press new age jazz LP from my hometown. As always, please enjoy.
Following on from their remarkable "Wilurarrakutu" album, Luritja singer-songwriter Keanu Nelson and producer Yuta Matsumura reconnect for another meditation on place. On the A-side, 'Place Where I Go’, Nelson sings about family, reggae music, and smoking weed over a foggy trip-hop instrumental detailed by elegant piano. On the flip side, 'Kapi Ngalyananni', Matsumura weaves a shuffling rhythm track detailed by clapsticks and melodica, while Nelson flows like water lost in a melody.
Place Where I Go is available in 7" and digital formats through Efficient Space here.
Melbourne's Left Ear Records reissue label comes in clutch with two hefty previously unreleased Australian ‘experimental’ electronic tracks from the '80s, presented as a double A-side 12" and a digital EP. First up, we have multimedia artist Tim Gruchy’s sonic journey through percussion, electronics and early analog synthesis, 'Jungles'. On the flipside, Michael Krilich plays with tape loops, cut-ups, and samples, incorporating synthesisers, effects pedals, a drum machine, and a sample from a “Wangga” ceremonial song sung by Emmiyangarl man George Morkai. The results, "Arnhem Land", speak for themselves.
Jungles / Arnhem Land is available in vinyl and digital formats here.
Fellow Melbourne label Austudy Records steps up with the first official compilation album of '70s Sydney studio musician and producer Ralph White's disco-era recordings. Over four vintage '78 tracks, Ralph and a handful of local studio players, including the renowned guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, summon up some seriously charged-up disco funk grooves. This one would be easy to sleep on, but the tunes are a lot of fun.
DISCO is available in 12" EP and digital formats here.
Wellington, New Zealand band leader, composer, percussionist and general jack of all trades Cory Champion returns with a new album from his Clear Path Ensemble project, "Black Sand." One for the private press, new age jazz scene, "Black Sand" sees Champion and a cast of killer session players weaving together a nine-song suite where rhythm and relaxation go hand in hand. Lead single 'Cascade d'Ars' is an absolute vibe.
Black Sand is available for pre-order in limited edition vinyl and digital formats here.
