Alerting your attention to a genre-agnostic tea dance at East London's Filly Brook on Sunday the 16th of February. Sounds of Slackness brings Espen Haa, Brian Not Brian and Piers Harrison together in FB's cosy, Tannoy-equipped back room; you can shake off your Sunday roast and still be in bed for 10 pm. Nice.
Espen Haa hails from the Norsk capital of Oslo and is renowned as a versatile selector and DJ. He has royal Norwegian disco blood pumping through his veins and helms the mighty fine Neppa label, reissuing and reimagining sonic treats from the dusty corners of the musical world. A longtime fixture on Oslo's underground since WAY BACK, he will bring his unique flavour to Filly Brook.
Brian and Piers are two of London's most recognisable record freaks. They have many years in 'the game' and at the controls, and they love nothing more than a multi-sound throw-down. Veterans of the global DJ scene and tireless champions of the odd/smudgy/unloved and grooving, this duo are making waves with their remixes and forthcoming original productions.
Entry is FREE, and there are 50 special handmade CDs - selected, mixed and put together by Brian and Piers - for the first people on the dance floor.
To give you a little flavour of the selections you might hear on the day, we asked the DJs what their current warm up, peak-time and end of night tunes are.
Warm up: Mike Salta - Hey Moloko (Music For Dreams)
This is just a very nice song. Somehow balearic, could easily be a starter and played at the end of the night. Melancholic AND positive!
Peak-time: Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - Today’s Your Lucky Day (Dub mix) (Isle Of Jura)
Fantastic dub mix,a true boogie-monster. Those keys!
End of night: Dennis Edwards - Don’t Look Any Further (Motown)
A stone cold classic from 1984, a perfect last song!
Warm up: J-Walk - Buggin' Becky (Balihu Remix) (Pleasure)
Some of MCR’s finest with this wicked sampledelic, laid back groover from 1999. Lovingly remixed by another absolute disco don, the inimitable Daniel Wang and the perfect record to gently shift gears on the dance floor (See what I did there?).
Peak-time: Bohannon - Rock Your Body (Part II) (Compleat / Phase II)
A high Grade electronic disco funk smasher. I have played this one a lot in recent times, and on a good system it really does come to life. This version is expertly mixed and overdubbed by none other than the man Boyd Jarvis, so you already know that it’s the business.
End of night: Sylvia - Lay It On Me (Vibration)
Deep, sleazy, slo-mo disco for the early hours. A gentle re-entry. This one oozes class and Sylvia isn’t really asking for much! An all time favourite of mine and available as a nice loud extended 12” cut for club playback. Sublime.
Warm Up: Tenor Saw - No Work On Sunday (Witty)
A statement of intent and slackness. Full disclosure: I completely ripped this off from James Holroyd who played it at another Sunday party. Listen to John Crow!
Peak-time: Bionic - Stay In Bed For Peace (Not on label)
Peak-time will probably be a bit looser than normal at Sounds of Slackness, so this hippie breakbeat roller with John Lennon samples fits the bill.
End of night: Terry Callier - I Don't Want To See Myself Without You (Acid Jazz)
It's a classic for a reason!
