The OG is sharp, jerking, awkward, agit-Funk. Joy Division throwing successive reflexes doing ESG doing “Crosseyed & Painless”. Limbs out at all angles. Head shaking side to side. A Mudd Club freakout. Fire & passion that could have been ripped from a John Peel radio show circa 1981. On the “808 Mix” Sal Principato`s liquid bongos double the tempo, while the subs are too low for my `phones. Ray Barretto in full Watusi, a Candido thousand-fingered man smashing a block party as it jumps its juice from the nearest streetlight. The “Columbus Hotel” excursion takes its name from the suite where it was recorded (while on tour with the Grateful Dead), and summons imagined scenes of debauchery and excess in an orgy of Peter Hook bass lines and Revox rewinds, synths like “Closer” or “Still”, with Hannett allowed to go tilt with the Space Echo. Halfway through it toughens into something from Ministry`s “Twitch”, Sherwood raving at Hansa Ton. Where Dub meets Noise. Bauhuas` experiments, Youth turning the dials for Alien Sex Fiend and Killing Joke. Basement 5`s “Paranoia Claustrophobia”. Dread at the controls.
