Elli’s debut combines a tight glaciality in the beats department that never veers too far into chill territory. So maybe releasing ‘Mambo014’ on Prins Thomas’s Horisontal Mondo Label could have had some little influence? Perhaps a meeting of minds? Or maybe just cosmic coincidence. Whatever way you cut it, the music here is spacious but with an electro tinged off-pop sensibility. Tangle in some ambient touches and keep a bit of classic 4AD intensity in the background.

Instrumental opener ‘New Muse’ sets the scene with a arpeggio led refrain that leads into ‘Race My Heartbeat’ which throbs nicely as Elli’s cut glass vocals seer through the and synthesise with the electronic backing. ‘Where You Belong’ combines a simple keyboard line before bringing in some lush sweeps and that voice again. A lesson in controlled euphoria.

Given the atmospheric cinematography of the music here, Elli’s cover of Roxy’s ‘Mother of Pearl’ makes a lot of sense. Bubbling along with a slight Euro beat vibe, her take pulls the in her own distinct direction. ‘Free Fall’ has a motorik intensity, again, not quite rushing but getting pretty close and with a velocity all its own. There’s more soundtrack vibes on ‘One Last Time’, totally hooky and how pop should be.

The smoky vocals ‘Baby Calls’ smoky vocals make it a little bit of a banger, hailing back a little to the classic days of Nordic disco. Then there’s ‘My Field of Experience’, taking a step back and some time out for a little galactic free fall. Then ‘Nostalgia’ kicks back in, and maybe channeling a little Giorgio and John for ‘25. Finally, ‘Momentum’ signals reentry, synth washes and soothing the senses. Top space pop for sundrenched out there excursions.

Elli's album will be released via Horisontal Mambo on 30 May.
