Jonny Nash returns solo to continue an ever evolving journey on his Melody as Truth label. Two years on from ‘Point of Entry’ his grasp of atmosphere and all enrapturing ambience is as strong as ever. If ever there was someone who can ‘turn on’ a mood, it’s Jonny. From note one, you know where you are with this music - totally drawn into his world of subtly powerful mood and effortless depth. Unfolding and evolving with each listen, the layers of thoughtful music are there for repeated bliss.
‘Blue Dragonfly’ gently sweeps ever higher, ebbing forward while whispered voices call from the centre. More forward guitar work comes in with ‘Dusk Can Dance’, a sunset soundtrack if ever there was one. Soaring sax comes to add to the dreamscape aura. ‘Bright Belief’ teases out slide guitar to beautiful effect, again evoking that coming of tide and an oceanic rhythmic feel.
The music here is sparse at times, ‘Moon Seed’ pares things back to a pure state. Everything is considered and here for a reason. Take the ambient jazz touches of saxophonist Joseph Shabason on ‘Angel’ as a prime example. ‘Rain Song’ is a highlight, a more conventional song structure it may have but the complexity and layered beauty on show brings together its elements to be more than the sum of its parts.
More vocals pop up on ‘Holy Moment’, a slightly strained whisper over a blend of acoustic and electric provides the counter balance. Last up ‘Green Lane’ is a masterclass in restrained euphoria. Then it’s over and the dream has ended, but the memories remain, ours forever.
