Maggie Herron ‘Another Wish’ (Holdin' On)

Words by Martyn Pepperell

Now, this is just what you need on a grey rainy morning, or a blue-skied one as well. Open-eared Honolulu record label Aloha Got Soul present a curated 7” and digital reissue of two warm-hearted numbers off Michigan-born, Hawaii-based singer and pianist Maggie Herron’s 1984 album I Won’t Wait.

Both firmly bounding at mid-tempo, and located on the jazz-funk and modern soul side of AOR, ‘Another Wish’ is a strutting sing-along detailed by elegant jazz keys and Maggie’s scorching vocal. Slightly more disco-funk adjacent, ‘Holdin’ On’ ripples with passionate commitment and desire as against a breezy coastal groove and glistening synths, Maggie lets us know she’s holding on to everything that makes her happy and keeps her alive.

Number nine in a family of 12 children, Maggie started taking piano lessons as a little girl and by age ten, was the local church organist. After high school, she hitchhiked across the US, before making camp in Washington State’s Olympic National Rainforest, where, in a remote cabin, she spent her days blending her classical piano training with folk and pop songwriting. In Seattle, Maggie began performing alongside established local musicians, who introduced her to R&B and jazz, triggering the next stage in her development as a writer and performer.

In the 80s, she decamped again, this time heading from the Northwest to sunny Hawaii, where she found a landscape and climate befitting of her sunkissed songcraft. Maggie decided to call Hawaii home, and she continues to record and perform to this day.

'Another Wish / Holdin’ On’ is out now in 7” vinyl and digital format through Aloha Got Soul.
