Leeds-based producer Miles Henry steps out under new alias Miles J. Paralysis with the Folktronic EP on his own newly-minted Crying Outcast label, brought to wider attention via the trusted Going Good distribution network. Miles is a new name to me, and this record is a fine example of why anyone invested in digging for new music will always place their trust in the curation and selections of their favourite DJs and labels over the data-driven algorithmic playlists of streaming platforms.
Not sure about you, but I'm a sucker for a delay heavy DJ tool. So lead track “Still Waiting” had me hooked from the off. Two minutes of lived-in 4/4 drums and percussive details getting EQ'd up and down and twisted around a dank bass line suggests Miles knows what exactly seasoned DJs want, before he notches up the hypnotic intensity with a strange, indecipherable vocal. Soon he’s pulling a smart trick of almost bringing the track to a halt, before switching up for a shift in rhythmic gear. Going Good boss man Brian Not Brian teams up with Test Pressing’s own Piers Harrison for a self-explanatory 'Like A Version' Disco Dub No.4 take on the track that hones in on the core groove to very satisfying effect. Headphones on for some nice additional details deep in the mix.
On the flip, Miles demonstrates his sampling chops with the B1 cut “Always Liked Scarecrows.” Kicking off with a pitched snatch of a weird (Cornish ?) vocal sample that will have you googling its origin, the track swiftly veers off into eyes-down leftfield house mode, never settling in one place. Some really satisfying heft on the drums too. A shift down in tempo for thick-set final track “Eavesdropper” demonstrates just as much rhythmic and sampled flexibility as what's come before, and will please anyone currently seeking out sounds circa 100 BPM. Some fine B-side action here folks!
