Nonna Fab could just be Sheffield’s underground renaissance man of the moment. One of the heads behind the super Apricot Ballroom parties (from personal experience these hit deep) and founder of Grub Records, also playing out as part of Fuji Speedway those fingers are in many a musical pie. So setting up a label was an obvious logical step, and this initial release on the aptly named Music and Soul Records is a top opener.

Making music that keeps a live feel with a nod to the dancefloor, these are tunes that would clearly work on the Ballroom crowd. And many others, given half a chance. The title track shuffles into view with some jazzy drums and moody keys, split with yearning sax work from Benjamin Ten-Bruggencate as it bounds forward. It slowly builds before dropping in some words of spiritual encouragement to the dancers.

‘Tropic’ rolls in the piano for a more uptempo feel. It’s lightness of being stuff, especially when Kali’s harmonies drop into the mix. Kali pops up again with some spoken word musings for the chunky brukness of ‘Float’ showing another side to the sounds and rhythms in Nonna’s head. Sheffield spiritually is alive and kicking, looking forward to what’s next from movement and soul.
