Isle of Jura come correct with yet another hitherto forgotten gem. This time the unlikely source material is a workout soundtrack from 1983. A couple of years ago IoJ put out some Shiva tracks from the same album, featuring the not inconsiderable talents of Leon Ware and Jo Ann Harrris. Now, returning to the source with yet more unearthed treasure in the form the ‘Aerobic EP ‘, four more pieces rescued from the original album sessions.

The sleeve notes read like a who’s who, with producer Andy Muson’s credits including work with Ringo, Yoko and James (Taylor). His bassist credentials are definitely apparent with the chunky funk very much up front and and on top. Rather than simply reissue the originals, this selection is Jura Soundsystem in full on reproduction mode. Teasing out and refining the tunes into extended dub inflected versions each with a part to play in the discerning DJs armoury.

Kicking off with the eminently danceable ‘One More Way’ just a pure slice of disco pleasure. Letting things down easy with a rolling piano break and super catchy lyric with just enough emotional heft to avoid cliche. ‘Show Me’ has a swampy bass sound that throbs along with dubbed out keys while ‘One Hand Clapping’ goes a little more cosmic. Lastly ‘Sweet n Nasty’ heads on more of a stepping tip, teasing out the woodwind into horns and layers of echo.

A few years in the making, retouched with all the expected care and attention that comes with the territory on Isle of Jura and worth the wait.

Coming out on 18 July and up for pre via the Isle of Jura Bandcamp page now.
