Light streaming through a cathedral window. A wash of ethereal vocals against a bank of honking woodwinds. A passing cloud, a disconcerting shift in mode.
Spivak's gorgeous debut record was called "Μετά Το Ρέιβ" (that's "after the rave" TP anglophones). The sleeve is well balearic, in a sand-in-your-speedo kind of way. Cut up vocals, jittery electronics. Cypriot Greek beats building on the lineage of Lena Platonos, words from Turkish poet Nâzım Hikmet and a stunning version of Cypriot Greek Manos Loïzos's "Η Πιό Όμορφη Θάλασσα" ("The Most Beautiful Sea"). Really a beautiful record that deserves a bit more love (time for a repress, please).
Imogen's Lament Maria collaborates with Malmo wunderkind Prins Emanuel for three haunting tracks. "Dawn" is melancholy dub echoes with a gorgeous vocal and an unforgettable tune--try not to sing along. "Heartblade" is a grower, synth string arpeggios and a vocal build steam and crescendo, the wave cresting three minutes later into a warm tide pool. While the layered reverbed vocals of "Imogen" may recall the lavish multitracking and production of a certain Irish singer, gurgling winds and a deep harmonic uneasiness creep in and give the lament some real bite. Don't sleep on this one.
Imogen's Lament is available on Bandcamp HERE and in all good record shops.
