Just out, TAMTAM release five pieces of joyful folk funk tinged loveliness as Ramble in the Rainbow. A demonstration of their broadening palette from last year’s more beat based double 7 releases, this new one combines restrained but still soaring harmonies and delicate musicianship to very pleasing effect. Each track winds its way into the soul. ‘Doors’ opens things up, building a blanket of sound that’s replete with strings, keys and voices of heavenly sweetness. ‘Go Down the Mountain’ is a little more stripped back in terms of lushness but its simple melody works perfectly within the shallow sea of effects that lap on its edge.
There’s a shift in gears and feel for the title track. It’s got a pop-funk feel that oozes warmth and delight. ‘Nue’ takes a more soulful direction with a little more stripped backing that is intertwined with various elusive noises. Finally ‘Distant Look’ is more synth heavy but this is all relative, right. Nothing here is there for no reason, beautifully constructed and conceived with a lightness of touch that begs repeated listening.
