As previously noted, The Rotation Garden Party is a festival that distils the culture we love to its essence: community, great sound, freedom and the best music. The ingredients are left to speak for themselves but must be of the highest quality. It takes love, time and a lot of hard work. Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton's event is in its 12th year, and now there is a companion compilation, 'Rotation Sound System Presents Everything You're About To Hear Is True Vol 1'. Lovingly curated by Ben & Dean themselves with fellow residents Wrekin Havoc (Rob J, Stuart Robinson, and Rich Hall), this collection is as close as you can get to a night of audiophile bliss in a beautiful yurt without driving up the M1.
As you'd expect from this gaggle of seasoned DJs and committed music fiends, the compilation finds the perfect sweet spot between obscurity and familiarity. Fan favourites nestle up against deep digs; the old happily sits alongside the new. Whilst there is no genre restriction, the overriding feeling is Balearic in its truest sense. To this end, certified crowd pleasers like Dhuo's 'Walkin' coexist with Greg Brown's UK boogie bomb 'Baby Talk'. Moondata's now painfully sought-after 'Let The Moonshine In' will please collectors desperate for a vinyl copy and seduce first-time listeners with its breezy synth-pop sound. Colourfool's blissed-out AOR takes you to daytime lounging on the grass, whilst Mark Seven's dub of Sundown Drive's 'Give it Up' has you in the thick of it on the dancefloor.
In short, this collection of music mirrors the ethos of the party that birthed it. Warm and welcoming but backed up with several lifetimes of dedication to the cause. Open-minded but never snobby and elitist. Nothing will replicate the transformative, soulful, psychedelic experience of singing along to 'One Night in a Blackout' on one of the best sound systems you've heard with a couple of hundred like-minded folks, but 'Everything You're About to Hear is True' is damn fine second best. As Dean says, “It’s not just a playlist – it’s a journey, a window into the sound of Rotation”.
