LEXX / OPEN SPACE / HOT WEATHER / PHANTOM ISLAND

Some things are just super-classy. Like a tailored jacket or Michelin starred plate of food. The effect is effortless but you can feel the craftsmanship behind it. And so it is with this (sort of) split release / collaborative project between two classy gents blessed with redoubtable taste – Lexx (aka Alex Storrer) and Apiento (AKA Paul Byrne, AKA The Boss).

The story goes that the pair worked on the tune a year ago upon which was it then passed to L.A’s Harriet Brown to lay down the vocals. Lexx and Apiento then divided and conquered to complete the work, with the former working solo and the latter enlisting Open Space collaborator Andrew Hale (yeah, of fucking SADE). And if that makes it sound like grown-up, sophisticated, soulful stuff, well, that’s because it is.

Lexx’s take is heavier on the dub and sultry balearic vibes whilst still being very much a soul tune. Open Space has that sweet British bass hit and is a little more spacious. Definite shades of Sade in the production there too, which of course is never ever going to be a bad thing.

You need this record now, and for many summers to come.

‘Hot Weather’ is out now on Phantom Island
