Africaine 808 / Interview

Where Are You From?

Dirk / Kempen, Germany.

Nomad / Berlin. Freedom Capital.

Where are you based?

Dirk / Berlin.

Nomad / Based in Berlin , Wedding …. that’s the multicultural central north district of Berlin

What made you start?

Dirk / The guitar of my grand uncle!

Nomad / As for DJing, I watched Beppe Loda play Afro with 4 turntables at a Cosmic Party in the Alpes back in the late eighties… I was a Record Digger for years before that, but that’s when I realized I wanted to become a DJ and went for it. Production came out of the need to create the music that I couldn’t find anywhere else.

What makes you continue?

Nomad / The same. I do about 3 to 4 edits a week because I want to get the best out of the tracks I play, and I’ll always make music to fill in for the stuff I can’t find anywhere else.

Dirk / Music is for me the best form to communicate and interact with people.

How would you describe your sound?

Dirk / I think that the feel is more important! The beauty for me is that the sound evolves all the time and you`re never finished with this chapter.

Nomad / To speak in the words of King Ubulu: “Like Water… always flowing , yet the most powerful lifeforce in the universe….” …. Champion Sound.

Where is your favourite place to play / party / other?

Nomad / I love Paris because the people there really understand what we’re trying to do …. I had the best times with Zouk Machines , Tropical Discoteque and at Secousse.  In Germany my favourite club is Salon Des Amateurs in Duesseldorf. “The Krautrock Hacienda ” as Young Marco dubbed it…. and of course our own Vulkandance nights in Berlin.

Dirk / There is no favourite place. I am very thankful that I can travel with my / our music, being invited to discover new places.

What are you most proud of?

Dirk / I am proud of my family and my friends. You know who you are. Thank you!

Nomad / Being the son of my father. Being able to look back on 25 years of intense musical studies, record digging, style building and getting respect and love from guys I call masters at their trade.

Touring Italy with Beppe Loda 2 weeks ago and getting introduced as his “No.1 Afro music DJ” made me blush.

Who are you working with?

Nomad / We only work with people we respect and love rather than everybody’s darlings. We work with Jan Schulte, Beppe Loda, Tingeltangel Soundsystem, Auntie Flo, Highlife, Tropical Treats,  Sofrito, Analog Africa, Tropical Discoteque, Mawimbi, Secousse, Voices Soundsystem, Afrobot, L’amour Soundsystem, Awesome Tapes From Africa, and lots of others….

Dirk / I am working on different music projects. Africaine 808 is the one I am spending the most time on, alongside Nomad in the studio nowadays. In the last years different artists have asked me to help them out with mixing & arranging their music, soundscapes, radio-features and so on…I am also working as a freelancer for public radio productions. Radio features and radio plays.

What are your plans for 2014?

Dirk / One plan was to stop smoking cigarettes! Done ! Now I am planning on not to start smoking cigarettes again.

Nomad / Win the football world championships…. of course.
