Sunrise / Sunset / Khruangbin

We interviewed Khruangbin a while back and amongst other as yet undisclosed secrets they gave us “Three For Sunrise / Sunset”. The group had their debut long player, “The Universe Smiles Upon You”, released last week on Late Night Tales off-shoot Night Time Stories, so I thought now would be a good time to share them.

Colors / Pharoah Sanders / Leon Thomas

The Sun / Kim Jung Mi

Chom Nang / Chatri Sichon

Khruangbin`s “The Universe Smiles Upon You” is 11 faultless, stoned, smooth grooves, like an all-back-to Martin Denny`s “Quiet Village”, the post-midnight air echoing with Lagos Funk, Hendrix`s Blues, Jefferson Airplane`s “Surrealistic Pillow”, “Wichita Lineman” and Johnny Harris arrangements. Like a Fabulous Three raised on a diet of Jukebox Jams rather than Rocksteady. Funky drums led by a guitar with surf in its distortion and a heart full of Deep Southern Soul; Rick Hall`s Fame Studios, Muscle shoals, The Tennessee and Nunnuhsae`s song.
