As anyone reading this probably knows, we just asked Mad Professor to remix Alex Kassian’s ‘E2-E4’, so when the finished copies came in I dropped some over to his Ariwa studio in South London. When I was in there and we were chatting in the studio Neil aka Mad Professor asked if I wanted to hear some music… ‘Of course’. And he played this new (old) one. The drums just kicked out of the speakers in the warmest way and it was like 'ok, this is good'.

‘Give A Little Love’ was recorded at the same sessions as the classic ‘The Creator’ track in 1986. ‘The Creator’ is immediately recognisable by its famous vocal lick that has been utilised or sampled by too many people to mention. The sound of those sessions were drum machines, guitars, synths and voices and a spacious mix that's really rocking on a tight rhythm in a loose way with the voice sailing over the top.

When you visit Ariwa there are rooms and rooms of master tapes and if you ever work with Mad Professor you learn that they work in the traditional reggae way of running mixes through the desk and mixing and running fx live. Playing the desk and fx set up like an instrument with the tape rolling. 'Run it again', take 2. And on…

‘Give A Little Love’ runs at about 117bpm, or around 60bpm in half time, but the point is, it works perfectly for the club now as it’s basically like a boogie dub tune. It’s got sa warm drum machine at the start before the synths come in and Aisha arrives advising you ‘To Give A Little Love’. The bass lines are tight and tom drums come in and out of the mix as the groove just stays on point. Oh and what it doesn’t tell you on the label of the record is there’s a dub too but honestly the vocal is so good that that is where it’s at for me.

On the B side it's bass all the way with a different tune from the vaults. This time it’s Jah Shaka, Norman Twinkle and Mad Professor with ‘African Message Dub’. Strong line up. UK dons in a room making heavy heavy dub together.

This may well be one of those 12"s that you flip the record over to play the B side in a years time and realise what you've been sitting on. It’s dubbed right out and it’s bass is so wide and warm… On ‘Dub 2’ there’s a dub effect that gets fed back from about 2:40 in where they catch a piano and it basically runs for about 1:30 until the end of the track. If I heard that on a proper sound system my head might melt a bit.

To be sitting on music like this is pretty amazing. What else is in there? We recommend buying it before it gets expensive. Rocking.

You can buy the 12" and digi at ARIWA's Bandcamp.
