Some records hit with an immediate dopamine shot, right away, no messing about. Others are a slow burn. Then there’s those special numbers that somehow tick both boxes. Repeat listens don’t get old. When these come along you need to jump on it, which is where we are with Cherrie Bea’s new one on Series of Taboo, ‘Pearlescent’. Sitting in a sonic sweet spot somewhere between machine funk, peaking electro and soulful house, each track brings something a little different to the table.

‘Pearlescent’ itself is a real moment. Slightly warping, roboticised vocals and choppy drums and synth stabs and sweeps mixed with some absolute funkiness and not a little bit of emotion. ‘Fortress’ gets a bit tuffer on the intro before bending the mood into something altogether deeper and expressive with a live feel that brings space and depth to the track. ‘Calibos’ goes more electro funk, a heavy slap bass does some serious damage while there are dueling playful and heartfelt keyboard lines that interplay to really give it something different. The final piece, ‘Two From The Sea, Five Fathoms Down’, goes more twisted really upping the virtuosity on the keys side and pulling in the lasers for added focus. Cherrie Bea’s put together something with a real original twist that is more than a little infectious. Don’t miss.
