Berlin’s DJ City returns to the fray with five bona fide pumpers in his 1-800 Techno guise, and pump they do. Released on the ever reliable Public Possession, each track takes the techno/house blueprint into fierce and interesting directions. Opening up with ‘My Name is Who’ which begins with a swirl of synth washes before hitting its stride with a rolling break and punchy chords for some peak time fun. ‘Fluorescent Horizons’ brings in some cheeky vocal loops to mix with the surging drum track and bouncy acid flavour. There are some old skool hardcore touches that give it a raw edge and no little bite.
‘Approaching Area’ sidesteps the more intense leanings of the earlier tunes on the EP into more deep and spacey territory. It unlocks the bass and echo effects box while maintaining the propulsive energy that’s present throughout. ‘SVT HD’ goes crunchy, with compressed beats and distortion front and centre. It’s a darker listen, taking its time to bring forth some lighter elements as the track progresses, spiralling upwards into something pretty fierce and intense. Ending on ‘For Several Eternals Before There Were Years’, this final piece brings together the connected elements of the music into a deeply satisfying whole. Drums designed to be played loud, almost choral elements and a tougher than tough kick. Deep music for dark rooms.
