As the story goes, Ibiza resident Russ Forman, aka For Mankind, has been threatening Athens of the North's house band East Coast Love Affair (Nick Moore (Linkwood) and AOTN founder Euan Fryer) with the idea of doing some studio collaborations for some time now. And lo and behold, last winter, they got together in the studio to record the eight songs that makeup "Musica Para Todos".
Inspired by a confluence of interests in house music, dub and oddball dance records by the likes of African Head Charge, Larry Heard, and Sun Ra, the longtime friends spent hours playing each other records and yarning about music before hitting the studio together with an intentional approach that comes into focus from the first needle drop.
On the opening Balearic boogie bounce of the title track, "Musica Para Todos", For Mankind steps to the microphone with his best pidgin Spanish, imbuing the music with some playful positivity that helps set up the sunkissed tone of the album before they take thing in a spacey, minimalist/percussive direction on "Ullal De Da Coloms". Up next, "Punta Moscarter" keeps the vibe galactic but with more of a chuggy, bubbly rhythm and chords that reach into deep space.
"Xylocopa Violacea" sees For Mankind and East Coast Love Affair leading with a captivating melodic figure that seems to repeat into eternity, building subtle emotion with every repetition before fading into the ether. From there, "The Morrígan Sings" and "Stay Above with Love" see things switching into a shuffling, South American-laced percussive house and lower-tempo dance modes, before they hit a laidback MPB pocket on "I Can't Wait" featuring the smooth-voiced Shetland singer Philomenah and fade out on the glacial ambience of "A Gradual Precipitation."
Musica Para Todos is available for purchase in vinyl LP and digital formats here.
