There are times when only a bit of house will do. A genre so diverse and multifaceted now, it’s difficult to keep track. But when you hear it you know it. And that’s kind of where things stand with Frits Wentink. The Dutchman has had a long and fruitful relationship with Wolf Music over the years and this latest one, ‘Heartbeat FM’ just builds on that again. Following up last year’s ‘Together EP’ with another quartet of basement heartbreakers for the dancers, prancers, lurkers and berserkers.
First out of the traps is the low slung vocal cut, ‘Rhythm and Blaze’, channeling no little of its namesake, but still swinging the beats in his own sonic direction. Super simple, tight drums, dubbed out horn and warm as you like keys to go with the soulful voice on top. A late afternoon hands upper if ever there was one. Then, ‘Lost in the Moment’ has more of a bounce and swing, squelchy even, but with that gospel thing going on top, keeping the love real, and putting a smile on the face.
‘Turbo Passion’ goes a little deeper, more dramatic piano stabs enter the fray and up the intensity while still keeping the soul intact, the production tight and some familiar voices in the mix. Finally, ‘Nocturnal’ goes harder again, for full on red light vibes. The intro’s chunky punch breaks into release of both love and happiness in equal measure. Easing off to give a little breather, the track let’s go for the final push. A classy four tracker, house done very nicely indeed.
Heartbeat FM is available from Phonica as well as other outlets.
