Ghost Assembly (Abigail Ward) returns with gnarly, politically charged, bass bin-worrying jams. Fresh from the success of 'I Miss Your Love', this is urgent, raw music, as much a call to arms as it is to the dancefloor. As she says herself, "laid down quickly and angrily after attending a demo in Manchester city centre, RESIST! aims to capture the galvanising spirit of protest and put it on wax". And you can feel that immediacy through the grooves.
'RESIST' comes in three complementary takes. Leading with the extended club mix: rugged beats, rolling percussion, snaking acid lines and the titular vocal refrain. A serious, serious heads down, head nodder that will do definite damage in darkened clubs. The Utter Kunt mix is a dubwise, sampledelic juggernaut owing as much to the Sleng Teng riddim as New Beat. The tempo may be lower, but the power remains undiminished! Lastly, we have the welcome return of bonus beats. In a day and age with too many DJs who are tools, we need more DJ tools.
On the other side is 'I Keep on Making the Same Mistake', which is faster and similarly rough but with a more emotive edge. The press release describes it as a " chilly breakbeat with a bass riff reminiscent of Joey Beltram having a gut-wrenching cry wank". And it's pretty hard to top that, so I won't even bother! We also get a short but beautiful string reprise and a radio edit of 'RESIST'.
As promised by the first release, Ghost Assembly is looking like the arrival of a significant talent. In Abigail Ward, we have an intellectual with an innate understanding of body music. You don't need any more incentive to cop this release (either on vinyl or digital), but I will say that all net proceeds from both vinyl & digital versions sold through Bandcamp will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians for 2025.
