Pacific Coliseum? If you're not from British Columbia, the name conjures up a mid-aughts vaporwave album cover; ionic columns and marble busts set against a hazy pink seascape. Vancouver-based Jamison Isaak will set you straight--no daft chillwave, this, but rather a tribute to his B.C. roots. Pacific Coliseum is a venerable stadium/concert venue (Hendrix played in '68) in East Vancouver.
Comfortable in any number of genres, Jamison has been putting out music as Pacific Coliseum since 2017 on labels like Coastal Haze, Slothboogie, and Noire & Blanche. On the balearic tip, check out his lovely LP from earlier this year, featuring collabs with Ruf Dug and Eternal Love.
Now comes a blinding all-rounder on Rhythm Section--four standout moods. Opener "Yeah" has that percussive techy synth vibe punctuated with chilled bits. "Breath Dance" is a sexy propulsive uptempo stormer. "Club Memory" is deepness tinged with melancholy. Finally, "Dreaming in Paradise" sums everything up, taking a bit of the sound of each track. Nice.
Earlier this week I caught Jamison on Rhythm Section boss/all-around mensch Bradley Zero's NTS show for a mix and a chat - he spoke of influences, growing up in the Vancouver scene, and the importance of local parties like Paradise. There really is a ton of great parties and music coming out of Vancouver right now--one thinks of Pender Street Steppers, the Mood Hut crew--and it's great to see this scene get more exposure.
Dreaming in Paradise is available from 25-July on Bandcamp.
Pacific Coliseum is playing a boat party 23-August. Set sail here.
