This being the second release on the fledgling Sweet Free Association imprint, brought to you by DJ, broadcaster, and vinyl archaeologist Sam Don. Having made his name with two definitive, essential collections of lovers' rock, he now shines a light on the broader world of rare and overlooked soulful, black music.
To this end, we come to Vincent Arthur's 'Esi Vivian' LP, an obscurity previously known only to a handful of dedicated vinyl freaks. The song 'Travel With the Music' caused feverish speculation and later gained notoriety when played as a last tune by a certain disc jockey at Dekmantel festival. As a result, the album became a legitimate big-ticket record. If you were to shell out the dollars for a copy, you would also find that it's a relatively quiet pressing, as is often the way with long players.
Well, hold tight, as Sweet Free Association has you covered. Sam has cherry-picked the finest tracks and put them on a wallet-friendly 12-inch single. Moreover, he has once again employed the Grammy award-winning talents of Frank at the Carvery, who has polished these audio gems to a high sheen. And this is a good thing, as these songs deserve to be heard by a wider audience. Whilst many "deep digs" can suffer from poor production and shoddy songwriting, these three cuts very much do not.
'Travel With the Music' is a joyful, propulsive afro-disco bomb with a gospel touch to those euphoric vocals. The production is bright and open with a particularly spectacular sax solo. If this one goes down badly on your dancefloor, I fear your crowd might be corpses. On the flip side, we have the self-explanatory "Afro Disco", a slower, slinkier jam with no less crisp and symphonic playing. Sunshine sounds! The EP closes out with 'Jubilation'. This is a deeper, more soulful song with powerful, postive lyrics that still ring true to this day.
